2020 first annual Happiness Summit

Topic: Mental Health and Trauma

Our first annual Happiness Summit, an online exhibition featuring two survivors of trauma, will take place in December 2020. We will interview two survivors of the Parkland shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School which took place on February 14, 2018. Currently, this shooting is the deadliest high school shooting in United States History, surpassing the Columbine High School massacre that killed 15, including the perpetrators. We will explore how these survivors and their school administrations understood mental health as a result of the experience.

Program Speakers

Priscilla Chierico, senior

Priscilla Chierico is a current senior at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Priscilla is a survivor of the 2018 Parkland shooting. She is invested in community service and is a part of two service clubs at her school: Key Club and Interact Club. In addition, Priscilla loves going to the beach. Priscilla is a mental health advocate and wants to bring awareness for other victims and survivors of trauma and gun violence.

Kailey Brown, senior

Kailey Brown is a current senior at North Broward Preparatory School in Coconut Creek, Florida. Kailey is a survivor of the 2018 Parkland shooting. Kailey volunteers at her local hospital and is involved in her student government. She also does Public Forum debate. Kailey loves hanging out with her dog, Tank. Like Priscilla, Kailey is an advocate for victims and survivors of trauma and gun violence.

Program Interviewers

Michelle Rubin, senior

Michelle Rubin is a current senior at Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She is a Technology Coordinator for Students for Happiness, assisting with website design and function. Michelle is involved in Policy debate, ranking in the Top 25 for Policy debate in the state of Florida. She also plays the cello for her school's orchestra and is the Vice President of the Young Dems club. Michelle also says that she is an "avid Among Us" player.

Raag Venkat, senior

Raag Venkat is a current senior at Greenhill School in Addison, Texas. He is a co-founder of Students for Happiness and is also the Executive Director. Raag plays tennis for his school's Varsity Tennis Team and is also the Editor-in-Chief of his school's newspaper, The Evergreen. In addition, Raag is passionate about science and medicine: he holds the positions as Medical Club President and well as Hospital Volunteering Club president.

Kelly Meng, senior

Kelly Meng is also a senior at Greenhill School in Addison, Texas. She is the Founder of Students for Happiness, which evolved from a Happiness Club at her school. Kelly is involved in Policy and Lincoln-Douglas debate, ranking in the Top 30 for Policy debate in the state of Texas. Kelly is also passionate about business and law: she holds the positions of Business Club President as well as Political Action Club President at her school.
